If your family is heading out to a dinner at a family pizza restaurant, and you're on a ketogenic diet, you might be a bit perplexed as to what to order. You are not going to be able to order pizza, but there are lots of other things you can order off the menu. While your idea of Italian food might be pastas and pizza, there are plenty of low carb dishes that are perfect for you and will not throw you out of stage of ketosis. Here are a few ideas to consider. The meals will be focused on fat and protein, and light on carbs.
Mozzarella Sticks with Marina Sauce
One of the best appetizers on the menu for people on a ketogenic diet are mozzarella sticks. They are basically sticks of cheese (which is perfectly fine on a keto diet). The cheese is coated with egg wash and a small bit of breadcrumbs (negligible in terms of carbs). The marinara sauce is made with tomatoes, olive oil, and spices. It has a very small amount of carbs, but it is fine as long as you don't overdo it.
A staple in most pizza restaurants, this is perfect for a keto diet. The calamari is super low in carbs but has lots of protein so you will feel full. It's deep fried in oil and is nice and crispy. If you are keeping to a super strict keto diet and want to really keep the carbs as low as possible, then skip the marinara sauce (which has a tiny amount of carbs) and opt for fresh squeezed lemon.
This is a chicken based dish, so it's not a problem for people trying to avoid carbs. The chicken is sauteed with mushrooms, white whine (traditionally Marsala wine), shallots, and butter. The normal recipe does call for the chicken to be coated in flour before it is fried, but it's a negligible amount of flour that won't be a big issue (unlike pastas, breads, and pizza dough).
This is a great dish for vegetarians. Quite often vegetarians have a difficult time finding appropriate keto friendly food, but this Italian meal is perfect. The eggplant is not carb heavy. It's lightly breaded and fried. Then is is covered in mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce and baked. The cheese is awesome for a keto diet since it's protein and fat. This satiates you and also won't ruin your low-carb diet.Share
